You all know exactly how serious we take our Lists. It may be something that is in our nature or it may be something we picked up along the way but creating a To-Do list is probably one of the most important weekly tasks we take care of at the start of every week.
So, Why is it so important to create a weekly to-do list? Here's my take!!
1. GET YOUR THOUGHTS OUT OF YOUR HEAD
By writing down your thoughts you are more likely to do them. It's that simple!! How many times do we make a list in our head and by the time we are done we have already forgotten something. It's like going food shopping with a large list. If you write everything down you won't forget a thing but somehow if I don't write them down I always forget the eggs or the milk LOL.
2. TAKE IT WEEK BY WEEK
People ask me all of the time "Why do you write a weekly to-do list instead of an entire list of EVERYTHING you need to do?" My answer is because if I wrote down Everything I need to do I would never finish honestly. I know in the back of my head what needs to get done but prioritizing my tasks and goals are important. So we write down what we know needs to be done for the week and break it down daily; Monday thru Sunday. This allows us to focus on the tasks at hand. If there is a job that needs to get delivered in 2 months why would I write it down on this week's list? Unless my workflow requires me to complete a certain task for that specific job then it won't make the board just yet.
3. AIM HIGH
We know what we can handle every week but our goal is always the same; complete 75% of our To-Do list. I always write down a little more than what we can handle for that reason. Between Andrea and I, if we're able to complete 75% of the tasks for the entire week; we consider the week a huge accomplishment.
4. MANAGE YOUR TIME
Wondering where your time has gone this past week? Well if you have everything written down you can look back and figure out what you have been doing and where the time went. For us we write down the tasks that need to be completed in addition to meetings, out of office errands, phone calls, etc. We spend about 8-12hrs in the office so it's important to make sure our time is used wisely. So when writing down our tasks for the week we allocate time for everything.
5. LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT - CHECK IT OFF!
This is one of the most important reasons we create weekly to-do lists. After a job or task is completed we cross if off. If you are like us, we get a HUGE satisfaction once a job is complete so marking off each task with a big red X allows us to see the progress. When the last day of the week rolls by and we look at our board; there is no better feeling than seeing everything crossed off. It gives us a sense of completion and allows us to focus on the following week.
